FUO Mass Communication Celebrates 10 Years ………as Chief Imam gives Insight on Islam and Media Impact

The Mass Communication Department, Fountain University, Osogbo marked its 10th anniversary, reflecting on a decade of academic excellence and industry-relevant education and training.
Over the past ten years, Fountain University's Mass Communication Department has consistently demonstrated its commitment to shaping the next generation of communicators.
The highlight of the commemoration was a soul-nourishing sermon led by the esteemed Chief Imam of the University, lmam Surajudeen Bakrin during the Jummat service held on the 17th of November, 2023 at the University Central Mosque. Imam Bakrin shed light on the intersection of Islam and the media.
The anniversary event brought together faculty, students, and distinguished guests to honor the department's achievements and contributions to shaping media professionals over the past ten years.

Addressing the congregation, the Chief Imam emphasized the pivotal role that the media play in shaping perceptions and fostering understanding in the society.
He highlighted the responsibility of both media practitioners and consumers to ensure that information aligns with Islamic principles of truth, justice, and ethical communication.
He added that, “Islam places a profound emphasis on truthfulness, and journalism as the purveyor of truth should naturally align with this ethical foundation and that sensationalism not only distorts the truth but goes against the very essence of Islamic teachings.”
He highlighted the crucial role journalists should play in building and preserving public trust by adhering to Islamic values in reporting, noting that journalists can contribute to a more informed society and foster a sense of trust among diverse groups.
The cleric frowned at the rate with which fake news is widespread among professional journalists and members of the public as a result of the pervasiveness of information communication technology and the Internet of Things (IoT).
He warned the users of the ICT gadgets to be awry of Allah’s punishment by abstaining from disseminating fake news and any information capable of defaming others. He strongly warned those who slander others to desist before Allah’s judgment came upon them
The Chief Imam delved into the historical significance of effective communication in Islam, citing examples from the Prophet's time to underscore the importance of conveying information accurately and responsibly. He commended the Mass Communication Department for its commitment to instilling these values in its students.
He also added that “as the department celebrated its 10th year, it stands as a testament to a decade of academic brilliance, industry relevance, and societal impact and that the journey has not been without challenges, but the resilience and commitment of the department coupled with the support of its stakeholders have propelled it to new heights.”
He commended Faculty members for their dedication to academic excellence and their role in shaping the department's success over the past decade.
Dr Azeez Olusegun, Sanni the Head of the Mass Communication Department, expressed gratitude for the continuous support from the university administration, faculty, and students. He highlighted the department's commitment to nurturing ethical and skilled media professionals who contribute positively to society.
As Fountain University's Mass Communication Department celebrates a decade of accomplishments, there is a shared vision to continue evolving and adapting to the dynamic media landscape. The insightful discourse by the Chief Imam reinforced the department's commitment to integrating Islamic values into media education, ensuring graduates contribute positively to the industry and society in general.
The Department of Mass Communication has continued to groom professionals who are doing well both in academia and the industry.
